Key Duties

Your key duties as Support Worker will be as follows:

You should build respectful and professional relationships with the people being supported

You will support people with their personal and intimate care as required. This includes bathing, showering, dressing and assistance with eating and drinking

You will implement Support Plan procedures, and involve the people we support in planning and reviewing how their support is helping them achieve the outcomes they want in life.

You will assist the people we support to shop for things they wish to buy including their clothes and food, and to prepare meals

You will be responsible for administering medication safely according to procedures, you will support people to attend medical appointments, You will assist the people we support to do housework, including cleaning and laundry, You will support people to manage their own money.

You will support people to travel to day-to-day activities, and to take part in short breaks and holidays

You may support people to take part in church or other spiritual activities

You will be expected to work in a constructive and supportive manner with colleagues, family members and external professionals, building trust by being open and honest

You will keep some written records according to professional standards including daily logs, incident and accident reports, financial and health and safety records.

You will deal with general telephone enquiries, record messages and ensure the appropriate person is made aware of important information

In addition, as a Support Worker in L’Arche you are expected to:

Be prepared to work flexibly. This includes working evenings, weekends, public holidays or Christmas or New Year.

Be supportive of the values and ethos of L’Arche

Work according to L’Arche policies and procedures, National Care Standards and SSSC Codes of Practice.

Keep information about the people we support, colleagues and the organisation confidential

Carry out delegated responsibilities for tasks such as fire safety, Health and Safety, petty cash, maintenance, medication audit

Monitor all communal areas of the building and report defects and repairs or health and safety concerns to the line manager

Develop professionally as a worker. This means you are expected to get involved and contribute in team meetings, participate in regular supervision with your line manager, and participate in training and professional development courses. You are expected to show initiative and leadership in day to day work which may include lone working, work towards qualifications relevant to your work and be open and willing to learn new things and new ways of working and develop a reflective approach to practice.

You may on occasion be asked to provide support in another L’Arche service in Inverness from time to time

The above is not an exhaustive list of duties and you will be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by your changing role within the organisation and the overall business objectives of the organisation

Person Specification: Skills, Experience and Knowledge


  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)

  • SVQ2 Social Care or equivalent
  • Experience of lone working and supported living
  • Understanding of person-centred approaches in social care
  • Understanding of the principles of supported living
  • Cooking/housekeeping skills
  • Be familiar with local agencies and opportunities


Note: If you have the right values, and transferable skills, we will support you with a comprehensive in-house training and coaching plan.

 Salary:      £9.53 p.h. plus holiday entitlement (£10.68 per hour)

Annual Leave:   29 days in year one, which includes all public holidays, and 34 days in year two, including public holidays.
